The current production at Baltimore's Hippodrome Theatre is the Tony Award and Oscar Award winning show The Fiddler on the Roof. I have seen this show at least six times, but never at this level.
To be sure, this is not an easy show to mount, no matter the venue.
The show stars Topol, as Tevye the milkman, father of five daughters, who has appeared in over 2,500 performances and in 1991 was nominated for a Tony Award in the revival on Broadway. He is battling the changing times in czarist Russia. Does the little village of Anatekva stick to its traditions, or does it attempt to modify its ways as the outside world is doing. This of course is the theme of the song Tradition.
For starters, how do you beat the music. The show features songs that have survived and flourished since its original broadway opening in 1964. Some of them include Matchmaker, If I Were a Rich Man and Sunrise Sunset. There are most likely very few folks who don't kow at least the melody of these songs.
Topol, who has reached the age of 74, looks almost as good as he did back on Broadway. There was some concern that the rigors of the role might impede his performances, but other than a few missed shows, he is holding up very well.
In short, this is an outstanding production that will remain at the Hippodrome until November 1. So if you live anywhere near the theatre, in downtown Baltimore, I suggest you get a ticket and go see it. If you go to a matinee you can make a day of it in the city, which means getting a crab cake for lunch before or after the show. Even if you've seen the show before, it is still worth a return.
Performances are generally Tuesday through Saturday at 8, Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 and Sunday at 7:30. Prices range from $20.00 to $67.00. For tickets call 410-547-SEAT. One final note, the show is three hours. |
